Vertebral fractures account of 27% of all osteoporotic spine compression fracture cases in men and women. Interventional radiologists are experts in the treatment of these spinal fractures using cement augmentation procedures known as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. In these procedures a small amount of medical grade “cement” is injected into the fracture to strengthen the vertebra and prevent further collapse. A kyphoplasty procedure uses an inflatable balloon to create space within the collapsed vertebra and restore height loss before injecting the vertebroplasty cement.
